In those moments it is really hard to know what to say. I have learned that listening is where to start. So I tried to mostly listen for a few minutes. Then I knew it was necessary to try to speak some truth to my friend. I wanted to help give her some much needed perspective. After telling her that I would feel exactly like she did given the circumstances, I shared what I have learned to do, or not do, when I am in a complete FUNK!!
1. DO NOT evaluate anything.
2. DO NOT make any decisions.
3. Try to say as little as possible until you have gotten your composure. I recently read that if you talk when you are really mad, you will make the best speech you will ever regret!!!
She eventually calmed down as we talked and I was glad that I could be there in that moment with my friend. I know others have been there for me in times when I wanted to say or do something that I would later regret. I often quote Proverbs 17:28 in situations like this.
"Even a fool, when he/she keeps silent, is considered wise."
